| Abstract in Deutsch: | Das National Museum of Australia (NMA) war seit seiner Konzeption ein politisch umstrittenes Projekt. Nach der Eröffnung im März 2001 sorgten besonders die Architektur und die Gestaltung des 'Garden of Australian Dreams' (GoAD) für Aufregung. Die Diskussionen drehten sich vor Allem um die adäquate Darstellung der australischen Nation und ihrer Identität und gipfelten in einem Gutachten über den gesamten Komplex durch ein Expertenteam. Obwohl das Komitee über keine professionellen Kenntnisse im Bereich der Landschaftsarchitektur verfügte, agierte es deutlich über seinen Aufgabenbereich hinaus, indem es den GoAD in seinem Bericht tiefgreifend kritisierte und sogar konkrete Vorschläge für eine Umgestaltung vorbrachte. Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie Landschaftsarchitektur auf ihren kulturellen Hintergrund Bezug nimmt, beziehungsweise welchen Einfluss der kulturelle Hintergrund auf ein landschaftsarchitektonisches Projekt haben kann. Anhand einer Literaturrecherche wird das Fallbeispiel des GoAD näher untersucht. Dabei wird gezeigt, welchen Einfluss sowohl die Geschichte der Ureinwohner als auch die Kolonialgeschichte Australiens auf das spätere Design hatten. Außerdem werden die Entwicklung der Beziehung der australischen Bevölkerung zur Natur und die Entstehung der Landschaftsarchitektur als eigene Profession beleuchtet. |
| Abstract in Englisch: | The National Museum of Australia (NMA) was a politically charged topic throughout its conception. After its opening in March 2001, its overall architecture and the landscape architecture of its courtyard (the Garden of Australian Dreams) triggered profound controversy. This controversy, centering mainly on the issue of adequate representation of the Australian nation and identity, cumulated in a Panel Review of the entire Museum complex. The review’s mandate did not encompass the professional proficiency in the field of landscape architecture however it clearly went beyond its terms of reference, criticising the GoAD profoundly and even putting forward palpable design suggestions.
The thesis grapples with the question of how landscape architecture relates to its cultural context and how the cultural background affects the landscape architecture project respectively. Through a detailed literature review, the GoAD is dealt with as a case study, with its cultural background examined in-depth, showing how the Australian indigenous and colonial history influences the later design approach. Furthermore, the evolving relationship of the country’s population to nature along with the concurrent development of the landscape architectural profession is illustrated.
The way in which the NMA’s design utilises the entangled stories of the country as its main design generator and the connections between the History Wars and the attacks on the Garden are depicted. This highlights the political expectations and intentions lying behind setting up the Museum as a flagship project of the centenary celebrations of Australia.
