| Abstract in Englisch: | Increasing volumes of wastewater combined with limited space availability and progressively tightening European standards promote the development of new intensive biotechnologies for wastewater treatment. In co-operation with a soft-drink company, basic design parameters of a new wastewater treatment plant had to be established through experiments both on laboratory and industrial scale. The wastewater contained mainly product-residuals and sugars, cellulose and glue from etiquette¿s, lubricants from the bottling plant, and mineral acids and bases from the water preparation. To achive an adequate C:N:P ratio for biological treatment the addition of nutrients (NH4)2SO4 and H3PO4 was obligatory. First the existing wastewater treatment plant with a 200 m3 activated sludge reactor and 80 m3 sedimentation tank, was part-stream fed over 12 months with an increasing amount of wastewater for the valuation of the basic design parameters of a future conventional treatment plant. Samples of the company effluent were analysed for COD, BOD5, TOC, suspended solids, and nutrients. Further, Inhibition- and TTC-Respiration tests were performed for waste water constituents like surfactants, lubricants and others. At the same time operation of a conventional activated sludge system and of a membrane bioreactor were conducted. The MBR is an advanced technology with a cross flow filtration unit for biomass retentention to increase sludge concentration and turn-over efficiency. For both systems biodegradation efficiency, energy consumption and maintenance costs were estimated, with respect to scale-up. An evaluation of biodegradation efficiency at elevated hydraulic retention times was done for both systems. Using the membrane bioreactor at a volumetric loading rate 8 times higher than that of the conventional system, COD and BOD5 were reduced by 95 % and 99 % respectively. Reductions of 94 % COD and 98 % BOD5 were attained with the industrial and laboratory scale system in this study. At a retention time of 12,5 hours, 19 mg¿l-1 COD in the effluent water was the lowest obtained value with the membrane system representing a significant increase in biodegradation efficiency compared with the conventional system where a COD of 39 mg¿l-1 was the lowest at 22 hours retention time . Another advantage of the membrane bioreactor was the improved quality of the effluent containing no suspended solids. Due to the high quality permeate obtained, the possibilty of recycling process water for re-use in the industrial process reduces the demand on fresh water supply.Due to the reduced formation of excess sludge, the requirement of nutrients was minimized. Design and operational factors were studied both at laboratory and pilot scale level, in order to calculate the basic design parameters for up-scaling. Finally, investment and operting costs for an industrial scale MBR-Plant were calculated. In conclusion, the MBR-system compares very well with the conventional wastewater treatment processes and also presents an economically cheaper option taking cost savings for freshwater and sludge disposal into consideration.
