| Abstract in Englisch: | In this thesis the occurrence of Phytophthora species in native oak ecosystems in Austria and Turkey and their role in the oak decline syndrome was investigated. Phytophthora spp. were recovered from 17 out of 35 stands in Austria and 38 out of stands 51 in Turkey. The assemblage of species comprised P. quercina, P. citricola, P. cinnamomi (A2), P. gonapodyides, P. syringae, P. europaea, P. cryptogea, Phytophthora sp.1 and sp.2. Among the recovered species P. quercina occurred most frequently and showed the widest geographical distribution in both countries, followed by P. citricola. These two species also showed the highest plasticity concerning the site characteristics and soil pH. Strains resembling P. citricola could be separated into three groups, according to morphological, physiological and cultural characteristics. In Turkey as well as in Austria a significant relationship was found between the presence of Phytophthora spp. and deteriorating decline status of oak trees. In Turkey in particular such a relationship was also found for P. quercina. In both studies the odds ratios obtained from logistic regression were similar, which indicates a similar association between deteriorating crown status of oak trees and the presence of Phytophthora spp. in Turkey and Austria. The occurrence of Phytophthora species was significantly related to soil pH, carbon and nitrogen contents as well as magnesium, calcium and aluminium contents in different soil depths and/or along the soil profile. With exception of aluminium all other soil nutrients and also soil pH were always higher in infested sites compare to the Phytophthora-free sites. In a stem inoculation experiment Q. petraea proved to be more susceptible than Q. cerris and P. cinnamomi, P. cambivora and P. citricola B were the most virulent Phytophthora species on oak seedlings.
