| Abstract in Englisch: | Picea schrenkiana forests in Northwest-China and a way how to protect them.
The partnership between the Northwestern University of Forestry Yang Ling an the University of Natural Ressources Vienna enabled to make this diploma theses about Picea schrenkiana-forests in the Northwest of China. It shows you the nature of China and the Xinjiang province. Besides this it is a description about the situation of forestry in this area. In the northwest of the province, there is the forestry comission of Gongliu. The whole area of this forestry comission is 164000 ha, but the forest land is just about 40,3%, the rest is grasland. The research area is called Kurdenin and is a part of Gongliu forestry comission. Especially in this area the endemic Picea schrenkianais growing dominately. Mostly the basic rocks are granit or limestone. Especially in lower elevation you can find loess. As regards soil, there is black soil and brown soil. It is surprising, that you can find hardly any soil decay in this spruce forest. The climate is very continental with annual temperature of 5-7°C and the precipitation is just 550-700 mm. Picea schrenkiana needs at least 400 (300)mm precipitation to grow. Especially in the shade it grows very well, but not on southern aspects. With 15 standard plots and angle count sampling the different stands are described. It shows stands in a mountainous swamp forest and stands in different elevations from 1600-1800, 1800-2200 and 2200-2600 m. Especially in a terminal phase you can find an extreme growth rate, 1414 Vfm/ha with top height of 53 m. The crowns of the trees are very long, slim, dense and look like a coloumn. Partly you can find old growth forests, but the regeneration is influenced by grazing cows, horses, sheep and goats. The animals are owned by kasach people, who live similar to nomadics. The question how to protect the unique Picea schrenkiana forests has to be solved. International categories were used to solve this problem. On the one hand a National park (IUCN category II) was a possibility, besides this an area protecting ressources with managemant (IUCN category VI) and a Biosphere reserve (UNESCO-MAB). In the end the recommendation was a Biosphere reserve. It can not only protect, it can also show solutions for the future in Chinas forestry. Forest rangers and managers can learn about the use of new technology and about sustainable forestry. The silvicultural management is discussed in the diploma theses of Christian Rohrmoser, with whom the work in the fields was made in the Tian Shan mountains.
